A busy fall, and promising new year!

It’s an exciting time in the inspiration and leadership training world! Last fall was very busy, with speaking engagements at a major media company in New York City, a public school in rural Texas, and a church in Washington state.

My theme at Yahoo! headquarters in NYC was centered around the issue of character, and specifically how and why people should concentrate on developing their character. I presented an easy equation: “Outcome” = “Moment” x “Character”. We all want to have great outcomes, and since we can’t control our circumstances (our ‘moment’), we need to develop our character as much as possible. I illuminated each of the areas of character using combat stories as well as personal anecdotes.

The church, both at the prayer breakfast and at the three services, was a presentation about combat, and the fact that in a sense, we are all ‘in combat’ all of the time. As Christians, we believe that the world is warring against us at every turn, but we know that Jesus is the ultimate victor in the end.

Finally, the public school event was one to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day. We would not be the great country that we are without those who’ve sacrificed for our freedom!

Today was a great day! I was invited to give a leadership seminar to about 150 future Army officers. I talked about the key leader principles of humility, resilience, and character. Next week, I head down to NYC to give a speech at a VERY high profile media company, and then after that it’s into Veterans Day activities! Wish me luck!

Sometimes it’s nice to get some help from your friends!

This week I’m in Amarillo, Texas with former President George W. Bush for the 2nd Annual Warrior 100k bike race. It’s an absolute thrill to be here with 20 other wounded warriors- the spirit, drive, and dedication of the warriors and volunteers is absolutely amazing. Mountain biking is HARD- and with only one leg, it’s even harder! Fortunately, just as in life, there are people here who are dedicated to “helping me up” or “giving me a hand”. When the steep uphill segments come, these dedicated volunteers are there to push me up.

Take a moment today to recognize the people who “push you up the hill” at work, at home, or anywhere else you find them. Live a life of gratitude and passion!

Team Red, White and Blue: Changing Lives (One at a Time)

I’m thrilled to be newly affiliated with Team Red, White, and Blue (www.teamrwb.org). Team Red, White, and Blue believes that the best way for wounded warriors to recover their lives is through personal relationships, not solely through government programs. They seek to pair wounded warriors and those warriors whose wounds are invisible (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, etc) with mentors in their local communities whose mentorship will help warriors achieve their dreams of education, employment, and reintegration.

This summer, I’ll be racing in the Race Across America (www.raceacrossamerica.org) as part of a 4-man team. We’ll ride 24 hours a day in relay fashion for as long as 2975 miles takes (from southern California to Annapolis). We’re hoping to raise money and awareness for this great cause!

I’m so excited to be speaking at Woodward Academy’s Veterans Day ceremony on 11/11/11 at 11AM! The theme of the presentation will be living our lives in such a way that a veteran might want to walk up to us and say “Thank you for YOUR service!” The first and most important step in living a life of that kind is leading yourself first! I have been approached many times about sharing my story of becoming a Wounded Warrior and persevering through the hard months and years that followed.
